Old Androids Never Die, They Just Have A Few Screws Loose

Snaprant

January 8, 2018

One of the things I hate the most about snaps is the so-called "security" system that makes them impossible to extend or fix if something's missing from the snap.

Example: GRadio, an otherwise-excellent internet radio player, does not have the MPEG2 AAC codec required to decode my local radio station Q102's stream. If it were a standard debian, I could just install the codec, (possibly) restart GRadio, and it would start working, but since it's a snap I have three bad choices instead:

  • rebuild the snap from source, including the codec I want
  • snap the codec, create a content interface, rebuild the GRadio snap with the ability to connect to the content interface
  • Get fucked

It's a real shame because all the other features work splendidly, but in this case I'm screwed.
