Make that 2 systems
October 12, 2017
So, I got two systems that even together were less than one system from Lenovo or Alienware.
First is Beast, it's an ASUS gaming laptop. GTX980/4G with 3.3THz i7, 32 GB of RAM, 256GB SSD and 1TB of 7200 rpm hard drive. It's 17.3" screen, and 10 pounds, so it is a monster. Ubuntu runs pretty well on it, all the gaming hardware works, but there are a few ACPI issues that need to be ironed out for it to be perfect. (We'll see if Artful helps.)
The other is Freedom, which is a customized 14" chromebook. It's not meant to be fast, but rather highly portable with a long battery life. 4GB of RAM, 720p display, but 8 hours of battery life and it's a full Ubuntu laptop without a trace of chromeOS left. It is nearly perfect on Zesty, but there are kernel issues with the sound device (someone decided it'd be fun to make the audio drive mutually exclusive with literally ALL other sound drivers....) Again, Artful might help fix it. If not I will just run a custom kernel.
